Y & P Consulting, Inc. was incorporated in the summer of 2010 but was actually seeded almost two decades ago when two graduate students at the University of California at Riverside, Robert Perez (Lipan Apache) and Chris Ynostroza (Chiricahua Apache), began collaborating on the American Indian radio show “Indian Time” through the Native American Student Programs office. Following in the footsteps of our mentor, Earl Dean Sisto (Native American Student Programs Director-San Carlos Apache), we solidified our social commitment to the Native community at-large through music, storytelling, interviews and current affairs. Having access to the airwaves allowed us the opportunity to engage in a wide range of discourse that covered education, politics, law, Civil rights, economic policy, urban v. reservation lifestyles, traditional values, ceremonies, powwow, scientific studies, historical incidents, entertainment, and many other pertinent issues. Our show was a vehicle for the disenfranchised to be heard, when there was no other outlet for Native people. Many Native dignitaries and activists graced our studio, as well as famous recording artists from throughout Indian country. In fact, the show is still on the air.
For the past several years Robert and Chris worked independently as professors, teachers, mentors, researchers, guest lectures, instructors, managers, trainers, among other duties, and discussed combining their formative collegiate and private backgrounds to form a partnership specializing in educational services and consulting, and historical research and preservation.
