The World Wide Web Foundation is a registered charity in Switzerland and 501(c)3 organization in the USA, with offices in Boston, Geneva, and Cape Town. The Foundation was established in 2009 by Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee to tackle the fundamental obstacles to realizing his vision of an open Web available, usable, and valuable for everyone. The foundation is unendowed and relies on charitable donations and partnerships to carry out its work. The Web Foundation promotes the right to an affordable, universal and uncensored Web through research, advocacy and campaigning as well as technical innovation. We work with civil society and others to use the Web to enhance participation and accountability, building more open societies for the 21st century. We help local entrepreneurs develop viable online applications and services that meet local needs, and support marginalised groups such as smallholder farmers adapt ICTs to increase their market power.
