United Way of Central Oklahoma is creating lasting changes in people's lives right here in our community. No longer just a fundraising organization, today United Way is on the front lines of some of our community's most pressing problems.
While providing critical funding to results-oriented programs at proven non-profit agencies will always be central to our work, increasingly we find ourselves called upon to address needs even more directly. From helping to write our community's disaster response plan, to addressing the startling number of high school dropouts, United Way stands ready.
We harness the power of 50,000 local donors, thousands of volunteers, corporate and government partners, and outstanding non-profit Partner Agencies to meet the needs of 420,000 local people each year. Working together, we're creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in central Oklahoma.
Founded in 1924, United Way of Central Oklahoma and other United Way's across the nation are a "local" phenomenon. Each United Way is based on the concept of community and its residents having a responsibility and a desire to care for their own.
United Way is part of a heritage uniquely American. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote enthusiastically about volunteerism and the spirit of Americans to work together for the common good of mankind. The same spirit is alive here in central Oklahoma.
Beginning as the Community Chest, the organization has evolved through the years as United Fund, United Appeal, and finally, United Way of Central Oklahoma. Through the decades, we have always sought to meet the needs of local people. Thanks to the investments of thousands of supporters, millions of lives have been changed.
