Our founder, Tom Patterson, was a former medical device salesman and became fed up with the way his underwear and undershirts fit. Instead of just accepting things as they were, he went out designed the product he wanted.
It all started with the question Why? Why do undershirts come untucked? Why does underwear ride up? Why do socks fall down? He didn't have a background in apparel, but he was absolutely sure that those who did had neglected the needs of men for far too long.
From the beginning, our clothing has been designed to solve the issues men have with their clothing. By combining the latest in fabric technology with groundbreaking, innovative ideas on how to improve existing designs, Tommy John has become the brand the modern man depends on.
We strive to provide men with clothing that allows them to be their most comfortable and confident, no matter the occasion. We pride ourselves in creating functional solutions that will never compromise your comfort or style.
We want to give every man the opportunity to look and feel his best. The rest is up to you.
About Our Founder
Raised in Milbank, South Dakota, population: 3,600, Tom always had an entrepreneurial spirit. He started a number of small businesses when he was younger and always knew that one day, he would start his own company when an idea came to him.
Before starting Tommy John, Tom attended Arizona State University and then worked as a medical device salesman. Today, Tom lives in New York City and on days he isn't solving men's undergarment problems, he enjoys traveling, surfing, watching college sports, and hunting.
Tommy John, Inc., founded in 2012, designs and markets innovative underwear, undershirts, loungewear, and socks for men.
The global undergarment space, estimated to be worth over $30 billion, comprises a significant portion of the $4.5 trillion retail industry. Domestic growth has been stagnant in recent quarters due to an aging population and lack of demand. Companies have shifted their focus towards developing markets where increasing income levels and trends toward Western fashion are expected to drive growth. Men's briefs account for approximately 33% of sales, and continue to be one of the more profitable offerings within the undergarment space. The online retail marketplace is one of the fastest growing sales channels for consumer discretionary products in the U.S. as online retail sales are expected to grow at an annual rate of 9.4% through 2016.
The Company is headquartered in New York, NY and currently has 35 full-time employees. Its founders and senior management team comprise:
Tom Patterson - Founder & Chief Executive Officer
John Wu - Chief Operating Officer
Tommy John designs and markets solution-focused underwear, undershirts, socks, and loungewear for men. The Company combines form and functionality by applying premium fabrics to its innovative and bulk-reducing designs. The Company implements its patent-pending "stay-tucked" technology into its undershirts, which are designed to remain tucked-in and eliminate any "Excess-Fabric Gut" the user may experience beneath a dress shirt. Underwear, the Company's best-selling product, is offered at prices ranging from $29-$35, while socks and undershirts are priced at an average of $16 and $40, respectively. Tommy John's direct-to-consumer online sales is its fastest growing sales channel.
