SEED's Housing Development Program was created in 1986 as part of our comprehensive approach to community revitalization in southeast Seattle. Since then, SEED's has purchased and rehabilitated existing apartment buildings and developed new buildings to provide safe, attractive and affordable housing for residents. SEED has an ownership interest in 9 projects with 902 apartment units, and directly manages 5 projects with 147 apartment units. SEED's Economic Development Program works with businesses, organizations, and institutions to improve existing commercial areas and broaden the mix of retail and commercial enterprises in Southeast Seattle. SEED's economic development projects represent an investment in the community of over $40 million and have helped to bring more than 500 new jobs to Southeast Seattle. SEED has initiated community planning in the past, and SEED supports business owners by participating in local merchant associations and other community groups.

Rainier Valley Gateway Plans
SEED has been working with community groups, stakeholders, University of Washington Students and design professionals to develop an action plan that can turn the Mt. Baker Light Rail Station Area and the Rainier Beach Business District into north and south Gateways to the Rainier Valley. The plans include a variety of ideas for improving the pedestrian environment, as well as the accessibility and appearance of the business districts. In 2010, SEED and the Rainier Beach Merchants Association received a 3-year "Only In Seattle" grant from the Seattle Office of Economic Development for various promotional and capacity building goals for the Rainier Beach "Beach Square" commercial district.
