SDGKU was constituted as a for-profit S-corporation under the laws of the State of California in December 2007 and was granted approval to operate as a degree granting institution by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) in April 2011. SDGKU is an offspring of its legacy institution, the International Training Center (ITC) at San Diego State University (SDSU). The ITC was created as a self-support international program of SDSU in 1984 and became a program of SDGKU in 2007. The Founder and President of SDGKU and ITC, Dr. Miguel Cardenas, created both institutions with the intent of sharing global knowledge and developing global competencies through the use of technology.
SDGKU offers global competency certification non-degree courses. SDGKU also offers two master of science degree programs in International Management and in Communication and Technology, as well as a PhD degree program in global systems. All programs are online, video-based, in English and Spanish, and presented using SDGKU's own Learning Management System that features individualized navigation and learning. All programs are competency-based, requiring evidence of global skill mastery from the student through practical projects with an international component that they must implement for their organizations or communities of interest. All instruction has been designed to maximize time flexibility for the student.
