Women who are donating eggs are required to participate in fertility treatments for 3 to 4 weeks. Normally, you will be required to go to approximately 8 office visits during this time. The exact type of cycle varies among physicians. It generally begins by taking birth control pills for several weeks to coordinate your cycle with the recipient’s cycle.
Next involves a daily injection of a medication that stops your normal ovulation. It is generally injected in your thigh or abdomen using a very small needle. After about a week or two another series of injections will help you produce several eggs. A substantial number of eggs are needed in order to give your recipient a good chance at pregnancy. A final injection is given to mature the eggs in order for them to be retrieved. These medications are given on a daily basis and donors themselves feel more comfortable injecting theses medications in the privacy of their own home. Other arrangements can be made, for example a spouse, family member or a friend can be taught to give the injections. During this process it is important to refrain from intercourse in order to prevent accidentally becoming pregnant. Once the last injection is taken, approximately 30-36 hours later, the retrieval will take place, which is usually an outpatient procedure in the doctor's office. An anesthesiologist will give you medication to help you relax in order to remove the eggs.
