MountainStar Family Relief Nursery is one of 15 Oregon Relief Nurseries working to prevent child abuse and neglect for children 6 weeks through 3 years old. We provide a therapeutic and crisis intervention services to families with young children who are experiencing multiple stress factors such as low income, health & mental health issues, chaotic home life, past trauma, substance abuse, and involvement with criminal justice or child welfare systems. Our Safety Net program serves over 250 children a year who seek short term support or are on the waiting list for more intensive services. The Healing Children program includes early childhood therapeutic classes, home visits and parent training that total 300 hours of contact time with families annually. A recent evaluation from Portland State University documented a 68% reduction in victimization rates for children enrolled in this program which is particularly noteworthy given that families have an average of 17 stress factors and children 0 to 4 years old make up 43% of child abuse victims in Oregon.
MountainStar funding includes government support (46%), private foundations (13%) and community donations (40%). We are a local nonprofit organization that has been recognized by Bend Chamber of Commerce as Organization of the Year. Our early childhood services have been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Families are referred to our program from health professionals, social service agencies, child welfare and other program participants. Our mission is to keep children safe, parents successful and families together.
