The mission of La Isla Foundation in Nicaragua is to coordinate the efforts of local institutions including the University of Nicaragua at Leon, hospitals, government Ministries, and community leaders, to determine the cause of epidemic chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) in western Nicaragua. Our goals are to identify the causes of CRI, facilitate treatment, educate workers, and support families impacted by the epidemic.
La Isla Foundation was founded in 2008 by a crew of filmmakers documenting the plight of plantation workers in Nicaragua. What they witnessed during the making of the documentary "The Affected" was a kidney failure epidemic among sugar-cane workers in the municipality of Chichigalpa, referred to by leading epidemiologists as ?veiled genocide.? Chronic Renal Insufficiency (CRI) is the number one killer in the region, where the number of affected is at least eight times more than the national average. In some families, the disease has killed three generations of men. The death rate is so high that the small community of La Isla is now known as The Isle of Widows.
Our vision is to facilitate a process that we believe should be a local effort. This means placing responsibility into the hands of local, regional, and national organizations and individuals, ultimately limiting our own role to that of coordinating the parties and providing financial support. We project that our current role will remain vital for a number of years; however, once this goal is achieved, the community will be equipped to manage this public health crisis.
