Insects inhabit firewood to use it as either shelter or as a source of food. Hundreds of different kinds of insects, such as ants, beetles and termites, can reside in green or seasoned wood. Kiln drying wood to a 8-12% water content level kills insects and the larvae that can live inside wood. The proprietary kiln drying process that eliminates insect infestation has been certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and we dry HOT!!
You should not spray firewood with insecticide. Sprays may permeate the wood sufficiently to eliminate infestation, and burning some insecticides laden wood in your home could be a health hazard. Kiln drying wood to a 8-12% water content is the safe alternative to using insecticides. We roast the wood to kill everything!
Burning wood is environmentally sound. The process does not contribute to green house gases. A growing tree absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and into its molecular structure. When the tree dies and decays, it releases the carbon back into the air. The same thing happens when the wood from a tree is burned. The same amount of carbon is released back into the atmosphere. Thus, burning wood is just a faster reversal of the natural cycle. This is unlike burning fossil fuels such as oil or gas. These fuels will release carbon dioxide, which has been buried in the earth for thousands of years, into the atmosphere.
Softwood (pine, hemlock and fir) should only be burned outdoors. It burns and sparks more "furiously" than hardwood, it doesn't burn as long, and it puts creosote, a potentially dangerous substance, up the chimney.
Wood is one of nature's most renewable resources.
