Working Families with No Place to Live
In Fairfax County, one of the nation’s wealthiest communities, more than 1,700 people are homeless. To make matters worse, more than one-third of Fairfax’s homeless are children—most of whom are under 12.
Many, many others are on the brink of homelessness, a problem exacerbated by the recession. When a boss schedules an employee for fewer hours because things are slow or an illness causes someone to miss a day or two of work, the lost paycheck can mean the difference between being able to afford the next month’s rent or not. So can unexpected expenses, like a car needing repairs or an increase in child care costs.
Such unavoidable circumstances can push working families into homelessness. These are the families that Family PASS helps.
Turning Struggles into Success
Two-thirds of homeless adults with families in Fairfax County are working—a strong indication that low-income working families cannot afford the high cost of housing in our community without some form of rental assistance.
At Family PASS, we strive to step in before families lose their housing because we believe that prevention is pivotal to averting the cascade of problems that often accompany homelessness—from children falling behind in school, to depression and anxiety, to families breaking apart. Our goal is to strengthen families and keep them together to bring up their children in safe and stable housing.
A rental subsidy from Family PASS keeps housing costs to 30 percent of family income. We also provide extensive case management and other assistance to help families launch. Assistance can include education, job training, child care, food, transportation, health care, help with children’s issues, and counseling.
